In Stage 1, I’d made a calm, somewhat soothing ocean backdrop—but this isn’t a soothing poem. There’s a high level of action, movement. Chaos. And while I’d planned to depict the surface, I realized relatively quickly than I actually wanted to look at the aftermath.
I started Stage 2 by adding some liquid acrylic pearl in various areas, hoping it would simulate ocean foam. It didn’t, so I patched those with a deep acrylic blue. I also mixed Titanium White acrylic with some gouache “sea colors”: Prussian Blue, Cerulean, green, and violet. Thinking about my favorite squid, I also threw in some lemon yellow sun rays coasting atop the water’s surface, with some iridescent paint around the edges.
Next up: a layer of gesso to protect what we’ve got so far, and then we move on to lettering!
Materials added: Acrylic paint, gouache paint, glow-in-the-dark medium, iridescent paint, gel gloss.
